Michael Weiss - First in the Market Matters
We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished as one of franchising’s most exciting emerging brands and we owe much of our success to our phenomenal franchise partners. One of those partners is Michael Weiss, owner and founder of Monster Tree Service of the North Shore (serving communities in the Northern Chicagoland area). Just like all other successful Monster Tree Service franchisees, Michael is committed to delivering true customer satisfaction while protecting the environment.
We recently interviewed Michael to highlight his accomplishments and ask him about why he’s been so successful as a Monster Tree Service owner. Here’s our detailed interview with Michael (if you’d like to see more franchisee profiles and other Monster Tree Service stories, please visit https://www.monsterfranchising.com/blog).
Q - Hi, Michael-tell us a bit about yourself:
Born and raised in the northern suburbs of Chicago, I went to college in St Louis. I have been married for 36 years and have 3 adult sons and two wonderful grand- daughters. Just a typical midwestern guy.
I love to play golf, and have played some pretty neat venues like St Andrews, in Scotland, the birthplace of golf. Played Erin Hills in Wisconsin, recently, site of the US Open this year. Tough course!
Q – What kind of work experience have you had?
I have always enjoyed working for myself, and have bought and sold companies over my lifetime. I’ve owned a paper packaging company for instance, then sold that to buy a distressed consumer finance company. I was able to turn that around, but it was like trying to turn the Queen Mary. It took me longer than I expected just to grasp the nuances. Eventually, I sold that and decided to take a closer look at franchise business opportunities.
I now own two well-known, national franchise massage clinics in the Chicago area, and one of my sons helps me run those businesses. I have really enjoyed the experience, and that’s why I was looking to expand my franchise network.
Q – Why Monster Tree Service?
Two words: Josh Skolnick, the CEO and Founder. I was looking for another service industry opportunity, in 2015, one with great potential for success, and low tech.
When I met Josh, he showed me his complete plan for Monster Tree Service, which was very sound. He also shared with me the formula he had put together, which if I followed to the letter, he said I would be successful.
Q – And…?
I made $350,000 in revenues my first year (2016), am on pace to make $500,000 in revenues this year, and I’m projected to clear $1.5 annually in revenues by 2020.
I believe part of my success is I am the first in the market to offer a true professional tree service with Monster Tree Service. That matters. I’d rather be first, than the 33rd guy just trying to find elbow room in a region overrun with janitorial franchises, y’know? Using Josh’s marketing and advertising plan, I was able to land business from day one. I have been getting referrals ever since and am on a preferred list of vendors for two large communities – all in a year and a half!
Q – So, what is the Monster Tree Service difference?
Our clients know Monster Tree Service is more than just tree removal and limb trimming. We take a holistic approach to creating a healthy environment and pristine yards, while creating greater home value. Our team has the expertise to spot trouble before it can really take root (no pun intended), then offer different solution options to the homeowner. Plus, our wide array of services like fertilization, soil analysis, and deep root feeding, keeps our client’s lawns looking super, all year round. People take great pride in that around here.
Q – What’s next for Michael Weiss and Monster Tree Service of the North Shore?
We are just beginning to tap the potential of the plant healthcare component of our business, so I see that trending up in a big way over the next few years.
I’d like to bring on another crew as well, shooting for an operational team of 8-12 employees. I’m setting a high bar there because we only want the best of the best when it comes to arborists.
Q – What are some of the best things about owning a Monster Tree Service franchise?
First, they offer such great support just getting the business up and running. We have a dedicated operations guy in Joe Demkovich who provides feedback, offers ideas, and makes sure we are safety compliant. Monster Tree Service business strategies are sound and proven.
We’re always busy, it’s outdoor work, which I really enjoy, plus one of my sons is partnering with me in this business. There’s nothing like working with family!
